Traditionally, offering tormas are made from barley flour and decorated with buttons made from butter. However, metals such as copper, silver and gold are also used. The benefit of the metal based tormas is that they are more durable than a perishable food torma. Indeed, a metal torma can be used for many purposes including symbolic weapons during repulsion rituals. Additionally, tormas are often depicted in paintings hanging from the walls in the temples of the wrathful deities. Torma offerings are most commonly used to appease fierce Dharmapala such as the Mahakala and Shri Devi.
